Lower YDL Match 3: Saturday July 18th 2026 (Macclesfield Leisure Centre)

First of all, an apology for the lateness of this report. There’s been a lot happening across the club over the past couple of weeks, so just playing catchup!

This fixture was originally scheduled for Robin Park, but a shortage of officials meant a  change of plan and a combined match with NW League Two at Macclesfield. The doubleheader format always brings mixed opinions, but from our point of view it’s a positive  step for league athletics. Sharing resources, supporting each other, and creating a busier, more energetic competition environment can only help the sport move forward - and Saturday was a good example of how well it can work when everyone pulls together.

A big thank you to Sarah Scott, who recorded the results for our league under some fairly testing conditions - including a printer that was determined not to print. In true Sarah fashion, she worked  through every challenge with a smile and still delivered her usual high standard of  customer service throughout. Thanks also to the Macclesfield team for working with us  so smoothly throughout the day. Collaboration like this is exactly what keeps these  fixtures running.

From an athlete perspective, one of the standout moments of the entire competition was Amber “finding the clutch” - more on this in the full report below...

4x300m – Skye Gordon, Grace Harris, Charlotte Derbyshire, Thea Lucas – 2nd (03:10.5)

…….. And now for the funny tale of the day… Amber, usually one for the shorter sprints,  stepped into the 300m relay. As she came past the start line - and directly past me - she looked to be cruising in what could generously be described as a jog. I gave her a  shout of encouragement: “Come on, Amber!”

What happened next was nothing short of brilliant. Within about 0.2 seconds she went  from zero to full throttle, like someone had hit fastforward. The spectators couldn’t  believe what they were seeing.

When questioned after the race, Amber simply grinned and said, “Did you see me find  the clutch?”

Yes, Amber, we absolutely did.

The U16 girls finished 4th in their age category.

U14 Boys

For our U14 boys, this was always going to be a tough afternoon. With only three athletes available, they were up against full squads from other clubs and had to cover a huge  amount between them. They did it with real commitment, but it’s important to say - we do have athletes in this age group, and we really need to encourage them to pull on a Wigan vest and compete. The lads who stepped up on Saturday showed exactly why  their age group deserves proper representation.

Sprints

A PB for Jamie Wilson in the 100m for 5th place (14.2s), whilst Luke Ashcroft recorded his first 100m race in a PB time of 14.5s for 3rd place B.

Also a first, was the 200m for Jamie, who finished 6th in a PB time of 30.2s.

Distance

Luke and Ryan Catton both ran the 800m, with Luke finishing 5th in the A race (02:36.5)  and Ryan 3rd in the B race (02:51.4).

Jumps

Some great long jumping saw a huge PB for Luke (4.44m)! And a big PB also for Jamie in the B competition (4.17m). Amazing!

U14 boys finished 6th in their age category.

U14 Girls

Sprints and Hurdles

Elizabeth Teslim-Balogun ran 14s flat for 5th in the 100m, with Lexi-Belle Conradie 4th in the B race (15.3s). Azaria Owens ran as a non-scorer in a fabulous time of 14.1s.

Elizabeth equalled her PB in the 200m (29.3s) for 4th whilst Lexi finished 5th in the B race (31.6s).

In the 75m hurdles, Jessica Wraith ran a PB time of 13.3s for 3rd place.

Distance

Poppy Duffy won the 800m in a time of 02:27.4.

Jumps

Azaria Owens jumped a PB of 3.82m in the long jump for 5th, whilst Jess Wraith won the high jump (1.38m).

Throws

Elizabeth won the shot (8.71m), backed up back Matilda Darby also winning the B  competition (6.70m). Matilda came 5th in the javelin (15.07m), whilst Erin Baron finished  4th in the hammer (18.53m).

Relay:

4x100m – Erin Baron, Jess Wraith, Azaria Owens, Elizabeth Teslim-Balogun – 3rd (55.3s)

The U14 girls placed 5th overall in their age category.

Finally……. After a few early teething problems - mostly everyone getting used to the doubleheader format - it turned into a genuinely great day. The atmosphere was electric, and the whole event  looked exactly how youth athletics should: full of team spirit, energy, and that brilliant  buzz of excitement.

A huge well done to our helpers and officials for making everything run so well, and once again to our friends at Macclesfield for trusting us and the process. Days like this show  what can be achieved when clubs work together.

With one fixture left, let’s see if we can finish strongly. Well done team.
