Upper YDL Match 3: Ellesmere Port – West Cheshire – 12th July 2026

The final match of the Upper YDL season took us to Ellesmere Port, where Wigan  Harriers signed off in true Premier League style. In only our second year at this level,  we’ve gone toetotoe with powerhouse  clubs like Liverpool and Trafford and  finished in an outstanding third place in the  Premier League - a result that speaks volumes about the  grit, spirit and togetherness running right  through this team.

For some of our older athletes, this was their last YDL appearance, and the day carried  that mix of celebration, nostalgia and above all great humour! And while we were  marking the final outing for some, it was  impossible not to get excited about the  strong  crop of younger athletes ready to step into  the Upper League next year. Their  performances throughout the season show  just how bright the future is for the club.

The celebrations were unmistakably Wigan. A surprise “John’s YDL Warriors” banner  appeared, accompanied by an unsettling  number of John masks - much to the confusion of Amy and Lauren, who suddenly found their dad’s face staring  back at them from every angle. It raised  plenty of laughs and set the tone for a day  full of togetherness.

Corey, having taken on the steeplechase  in his last YDL match, was keen to have  his moment in his final outing for the team. He threw himself into it, quite literally, with a committed “bomb” into the water  jump and even managed a quick wave to his fanbase on the way through. Josh  lined up alongside him, clearly preparing  to step into Corey’s shoes next year, but  with only a recent return to training  behind him, the event proved a bit too  much this time around. It’s this have a go attitude that we’re so proud of, and it’s a must for any future Wigan team.

Here are the full results:

U20 Men

Sprints and hurdles

A return to action for Luke Tonge after a  lengthy injury saw him finish 3rd in the 100m in a time of 11.5s. Second claim Joel Watson ran a PB as the B runner for 4th place (12.2s).  Owen Baron finished 3rd in the 200m (24.0s), with Sami Manir-Jolley 4th in the 400m (54.6s).

Corey Middleton won the 110m hurdles  (15.1s), with Owen Baron winning the B race in an equal PB time (16.8s), whilst Corey also won the 400m hurdles (58.0s).

Distance

It was great to see John Hassan (U18) competing for us in the 800m winning the A race  in 2:02.4. Second claim Alfie Blizzard (U18) won the B race (2:08.2) – both boys stepping up to the U20 age  group. Sami Manir-Jolley again showed his class winning the  1500m race in 4:18.9.

Over in the 2000m steeplechase, Corey took his moment and won the race in 8:17.1 – most of all, he had a lot of fun (he really likes jumping over stuff)!

Jumps

Joel Watson competed in all of the jumps  and was very close to his PB in each – winning the long jump (5.75m), whilst  finishing 2nd in high jump (1.70m) and also  triple  jump (11.15m).

Throws

Corey won the shot putt (8.27m) – it feels like he was everywhere in his last  YDL match ever! Whilst Owen won the  discus  (18.23m), supported by dad Rob who  impressively started a sole clap for him.

Relay:

4x100m – Henry McLeod, Corey Middleton, Joel  Watson, Owen Baron – Unfortunately due to stepping out of a lane received a DQ

U20 Women

Sprints

Grace Winrow finished 4th in the 100m  (13.6s) and won the B 200m (27.8s), whilst Isobel Dyson finished 2nd as the 200m A  runner (27.6s).

In the 400m, Gracie Scott finished 3rd  (64.1s), with second claim Hannah Hull  winning the B race (63.6s).

Distance

It was a Wigan debut for second claim  member Olivia Hasleden, finishing 2nd in  the 800m (2:27.8).

Jumps

Gracie Scott selflessly stepped in to cover  the long jump after Amy Hewitt (recently  experiencing a bout of illness) was unable to compete in the event.  Gracie finished 2nd  with a single 4:54m jump. Thank you Gracie for looking after your teammate and friend. Amy was also forced to withdraw from the  high jump for medical reasons.

Throws

Gracie finished 2nd in the shot putt (8.37m) and won the javelin (32.76m), whilst Amy  managed to throw one javelin (purely for the points) and won the B competition (21.55m).  Amy also threw a 13.27m discus for 5th  place. Not the final YDL performances that  she  was hoping for, but she has done herself  proud in all she has contributed to the team  over her previous performances, and we are very proud of her.

Relay:

4x100m – Isobel Dyson, Grace Winrow, Holly Nicholls, Ellie Barker – 1st (54.3s)

U18 Men

Sprints and hurdles

Alfie Walsh finished in 5th place in the 100m (11.9s) with second claim member Christian Morrall-Santana in 6th place as the B runner (12.3s). In the 200m, it was Henry Mcleod finishing  in 5th (24.9s), backed up again by Christian running a PB of 25.4s for 4th (B).

In the 400m, second claim Thomas  Darbyshire came 3rd (52.8s), with Will  Ashcroft 5th (B) 56.0s. Meanwhile in the 400m hurdles, Josh Roberts ran a gutsy race to finish 3rd with a PB time 67.1s.

Distance

Over in the 800m, Dylan Gough finished in 5th place as the A runner (2:05.0), with  Alexander Glenn 2nd in the B race (2:05.1).  Second claim Jack Broadhurst took on the  1500m and finished in 7th place with a time of 4:50.0.

Josh Roberts then boldly stepped up to run in the 2000m steeplechase, only to realise  that on such a hot day, following a previous 400m hurdle race and after a recent return  to training it was all a bit too much and retired. Don’t worry Josh, I’m sure that Corey will  give you some pointers for future  performances. Well done for giving it a go!

Jumps

Alfie Walsh placed 3rd in the long jump  (5.25m) with Josh Roberts winning the B  competition (5.16m). In the high jump,  Thomas Darbyshire got over 1.60m for 3rd  place.  Finally, in the triple jump, Christian managed a best of 10.07m for 5th place, with Alfie  Walsh unfortunately experiencing some  struggles on this occasion and not landing a legal jump.

Throws

Isaac Wright took on three of the throws  with the following results: Shot Putt, 3rd  place  (10.53m), Discus, 3rd place (36.34m),  Hammer, 3rd place (28.29m). Thomas Darbyshire  finished 5th in the javelin with a best of 23.74m.

Holly Nicholls finished 3rd in the 1500m  steeplechase A race (6:10.0), with Esme  Harris,  eager to also take on the event winning the B race (7:15.7).

Jumps

In the long jump, Thia jumped a PB of 5.43m for 2nd place, with Lauren Hewitt, slowly  returning to the event following a break,  winning the B competition (4.74m).

A very windy high jump competition (where the athletes were literally being blown into  the bar) saw both of our girls win – Lauren in the A competition (1.45m) and  Kady as the B (1.40m). Lauren then took 2nd  place in the triple jump with a best of 10.25m.

Another PB for Ava in the hammer for 5th  place (27.70m), with Ellie Barker 3rd B (26.10m). Finally to conclude the throws, Ava took 3rd place in the javelin with a best of 23.34m.

Finally

All that remains to say is that we are  incredibly proud of this club - every athlete, coach, parent and official  who has played a part in making this season  such a success. We also want to say a  special thank you to our second claim athletes. You have helped us  enormously, conducted yourselves  brilliantly and  fitted in perfectly. We hope you’ve felt like an integral part of the team, and you will  always be welcome back to compete for  Wigan.

Finishing third in the Premier League in only our second season at this level is a fantastic achievement, and it reflects the commitment and togetherness shown across the  whole squad. To our older athletes who now move on to new adventures, including  university,  we wish you enormous good luck. We hope you’ve enjoyed the YDL experience - you will certainly be missed, and you’re  welcome back at any time to help out or  simply  cheer the team on.

Next year brings an exciting period of  adjustment as we welcome our upcoming age group into the Upper League. There are  some big shoes to fill, but we are confident you will  rise to the challenge and continue the proud tradition of this team.

For now, enjoy the rest of your summer and feel proud of everything you’ve achieved.  Well done, team.

John Hewitt - YDL Team Manager
