Lower YDL Match 4 @Witton Park Blackburn

Writer: Danielle McGiffordDanielle McGifford

It was off to Blackburn for the final lower YDL match of the year. The final match date is never a great one as it always falls at the start of the summer holidays, meaning that turnout is a challenge. Nonetheless we pulled together as many as we could for one last push and managed to see some fantastic performances.

U15 Boys

In the sprints, it was the Henrys who both ran PBs in the 100m. Henry McCleod improved his previous best by 1 second running 12.7s (A) for fifth. Henry Morris also ran a PB as the B runner finishing in 13.5s for sixth. Henry McCleod then went on to run his first competitive 200m finishing the A race in 5th (26.3s), whilst Josh Roberts won the B race in 25.3s.

In the 300m Josh came third in the A race (40.1s), whilst Alexander Glenn made an impressive 300m debut winning the B race in 41.6s.

To conclude the sprints, Sam Hodgkinson ran a fantastic 80m hurdles PB (13.8s) to finish fourth. From starting the season with 17.4s that is a massive improvement – well done Sam!

In the distance races, it was back to Alexander Glenn in the 800m finishing the A race in 02.17 for fourth, whilst Zak Manir Jolley came fifth in the 1500m with 04.54.

Some impressive PBs were seen in the jumps. First saw Josh Roberts increase his long jump PB by 7cm to place fourth with 5.11m. Henry McCleod finished sixth as the B with 2.34m. Then it was over to Sam Hodgkinson again, this time with a whopping 10cm high jump PB to clear 1.60m and finish second on countback. I mean, why not just skip 1.55m Sam and go straight to 1.60m?! Alexander Glenn also PB’d as the B coming third with 1.35m.

In the throws it was Sam’s third PB of the day as he added a metre to his javelin PB throwing 24.40m for fourth. What is your mum feeding you Sam? Meanwhile Henry Morris threw a shot PB of 5.39 for sixth and made his discus debut throwing 10.20m, also for sixth.

It is very unfortunate that we couldn’t quite pick up enough points to avoid falling into the bottom two teams and facing relegation next season. That said, we have seen a lot of new talent come through this season and it has been a period of transition. Many of you have competed for the very first time and are only just starting to see where your strengths lie. Keep enjoying both training and competing and we will come back stronger next year.

I hope you have all enjoyed this year’s YDL fixtures as much as I have – and we even managed to hold a fixture at our own club (which we hadn’t managed for some time).

A huge thank you to all who turned up and competed for the club and to parents and officials for supporting (it doesn’t go unnoticed).

Now enjoy your summer holidays and let’s hope we get some sun!
